Differences Between ReLEx SMILE and ReLEx SMILE Pro
Both are ReLEx SMILE generations with the same level of sophistication; however, the ReLEx SMILE Pro machine is the latest laser technology evolution from Zeiss, offering a more comfortable LASIK experience with a shorter treatment time. With this latest technology, the thin corneal stromal tissue (lenticule) is created faster — in just 8 seconds — compared to ReLEx SMILE, which takes around 24 seconds.
ReLEx SMILE has a frequency speed of 500 hertz, while ReLEx SMILE Pro has a frequency speed of 2000 hertz with advanced scanning innovation. This shortens the “suction time,” making it faster and more comfortable. The faster laser speed results in a shorter “suction time” and can reduce the likelihood of “suction loss,” so we are confident this makes patients feel more comfortable during LASIK surgery.

ReLEx SMILE Procedure
ReLEx SMILE is a single-step laser procedure where treating one eye only takes about 4 minutes. But specifically for the laser process itself, it only takes about 24 seconds. The ReLEx SMILE process is performed very gently, with very low suction, providing patient comfort and reducing pressure sensation on the eye.
First Stage
In one single step, as the first process, the VisuMax machine takes about 24 seconds to create the lenticule (a thin layer formed on the corneal stroma, adjusted to the required correction) and creates a small incision of about 2–4mm on the corneal surface.
Second Stage
The lenticule , which represents the correction is then removed through the small incision that was made. The corneal structure is not disturbed or manipulated at all and remains stable.
Third Stage
Removing the lenticule changes the path of light entering the eye, restoring sharp vision. The small incision heals on its own.
Who Is an Ideal Candidate?
- Criteria for ReLEx SMILE. ReLEx SMILE is very well suited for patients with myopia between -1.00D and -10.00D and astigmatism up to -5.00D.
- Ideal Candidates for ReLEx SMILE. Aged 18 years or older, not pregnant or breastfeeding, no history of eye disease.
- Eye Conditions for ReLEx SMILE. No significant change in eyeglass prescription over the past 12 months. No corneal disease, significant retinal degeneration, severe dry eye, etc.
Advantages of ReLEx SMILE
- Minimally Invasive. Compared to conventional LASIK, the corneal incision for flap creation is 80% smaller. In LASIK, the incision can reach 20mm, while in ReLEx SMILE it is less than 4mm.
- No Flap – Unlike LASIK. No flap complications, such as a shifted or detached flap, since no flap is created.
- The Upper Corneal Structure Remains Intact. Since this procedure involves no flap, the upper cornea is not touched at all. This keeps the corneal structure stable.
- Minimal Dry-Eye Discomfort After Surgery. This procedure reduces post-operative dry eye because only a small number of corneal nerves are cut. These nerves play a role in tear production.
