Jakarta. LASIK has risen to become the number one choice in correcting your refractive conditions of the eye. Today, ReLEx SMILE takes its rightful position as the vanguard of LASIK development.
ReLEx® SMILE stands for Refractive Lenticule Extraction, Small Incision Lenticule Extraction.
Dr Utami Noor Sya’baniyah, ophthalmologist for Ciputra SMG Eye Clinic, expounds on how ReLEx SMILE uses a laser beam, substituting for a blade, involving no flaps in the correction of refractive conditions of the eye – namely nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.
In contrast to previous generations of LASIK, which involved incisions in the cornea of up to 20 mm, ReLEx SMILE makes incisions 2-4mm tiny. It is also significantly accelerated, taking up only about 10 minutes. It’s safer and makes for less discomfort to the patient – plus, less after-effects such as dryness of the eye.
Although this method is fairly safe, not all myopic and astigmatic individuals can undergo the procedure. Some requirements for undergoing ReLEx® SMILE are:
(a) You are aged 18 years or over
(b) Your prescription hasn’t changed significantly in the past year
(c) You are myopic to a degree of –10.00 diopters or astigmatic to a degree of –5.00 diopters
(d) You’re not pregnant
(e) You’ve had no adverse medical history relating to your eyes
(f) You have no adverse familial medical history relating to diseases of the eye.
