The LASIK trend in Indonesia has very much launched into a boom. How else can refrative conditions be treated in such short a time? The newest generation of LASIK is ReLEx SMILE. But what’s it do?
As Dr Utami Noor Sya’baniyah with Ciputra SMG Eye Clinic explains, refractive conditions of the eye are commonly experienced by urbanite, educated Indonesians. For example, the prevalence of refractive conditions of the eye in the Jakarta National Capital Region is around 15-20 prercent.
It is common to use glasses and contacts to handle these cases. But they are of course, impermanent solutions, and a precursor to LASIK, and subsequently ReLEx SMILE.
“We have the technology. ReLEx SMILE can regularize the vision of a person suffering from a refractive condition of the eye”, said Dr Utami to the assembled press at the ReLEx SMILE launch @ Ciputra SMG Eye Clinic, Lotte Shopping Avenue, South Jakarta, on Friday, 2015.09.18.
ReLEx SMILE itself stands for Refractive Lenticule Extraction, Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. The technique uses a bladeless refractive surgical procedure and takes about ten minutes.
One must be 18 and above, be myopic to a degree –10.00 diopters or astigmatic to a degree of –5.00 diopters, not pregnant, and not have adverse familial medical history relating to conditions of the eye.
Even though the technique makes it straightforward for patients to regain 20/20 vision, in a few years, they may be afflicted by myopia. This may happen if they are unable to prevent it from coming back, and thus, they are advised to attend to regular control sessions with an ophthalmologist.
