From a technological standpoint, laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (hereinafter referred to as LASIK) has undergone many changes to become the premier method of restoring vision sharpness today.
LASIK is a method of refractive surgery that can correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
Dr. Utami Noor Sya’baniyah, SpM, a specialist for the Ciputra SMG Eye Clinic, confides in us that the newest development in LASIK is the femtosecond laser, which eliminates need of a blade – as was common in LASIK procedures of the past.
To wit, “since 2011, ReLEx SMILE, one of the latest and greatest in LASIK technology, uses only one type of laser. This is the newest iteration of the femtosecond laser, and enables flapless procedures”.
“ReLEx SMILE uses technology that can create a lenticule in the inner corneal layer, by making a 2-4 mm tiny incision on the corneal surface. This process takes up all of 30 seconds. This differs from previous-generation LASIK methods in that they would have created incisions of up to 20 mm, and required a longer operating time. And not everyone with myopia/astigmatism could undergo the procedure, either.”
Dr. Sya’baniyah continues by rattling off the rules for those who want to come in for the procedure. First, they must be 18 and above. Second, they cannot have had a significant change in their vision prescription during the past year. Third, their myopia can go up to –10 diopters, and if astigmatic, up to –5 diopters. Fourth, they cannot be pregnant. Fifth, they must have had no significant medical history relating to their eyes. Sixth, they must not have diseases of the eye that run in the family; finally, they don’t do extreme sports.
She concludes by saying that, post-operation, the patient will have recovered quickly and comfortably due to the minusculeness of the incision on the corneal surface. This makes for faster healing, and little after-effects such as dryness of the eye or sensitivity to light.
Ciputra Healthcare Director Veimeirawaty remarks that, to take advantage of this innovation in LASIK methodology, will set one back by IDR35.000.000-40.000.000 for both eyes.
