LASER Eye Surgery: What You Have to Know?
LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a corrective surgery which open a thin layer of the cornea, allowing the laser light to change the shape of the cornea and eliminate abnormalities of refraction myopia (nearsightedness / eye minus) and astigmatism (cylindrical eyes).
The LASIK method evolved from the 1960s until now and there are three generations of commonly used LASIK methods
The first is Photorefractive Keratectomy, or PRK, is a type of eye surgery to correct myopia and cylinders by making a flap on the surface of the cornea with a scalpel.
Secondly, FemtoLASIK is a type of eye surgery that uses a femtosecond laser to create a flap on the surface of the cornea and is followed by an excimer laser to correct refractive abnormalities. This makes the FemtoLASIK procedure more accurate and safer than the previous LASIK method.
The latest LASIK technology, ReLEx® SMILE (Refractive Lenticule Extraction, Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the latest LASIK method that can correct refractive abnormalities without the need to make a corneal flap like the previous method.
The healing process is much faster and the action only takes a few seconds. After completion of surgery, vision will reach 80% and continue up to 100% within a few days. *
for patients who have LASIK eye procedures at Ciputra SMG Eye Clinic, we provide a Lifetime Protection service, a lifetime lasik guarantee with the aim of helping to maintain your vision as good as possible at all times.
FemtoLASIK
- The femtosecond laser is used to make a very thin flap (around 10mm) through millions of tiny laser spots directed at the surface of the cornea. This whole procedure uses laser technology without a scalpel. When the flap layer on the cornea has been completed, the flap is opened slowly and the eye is ready for the second step.
- Then proceed with excimer laser for a few seconds. After that, the flap is closed again and will stick by itself.
- Is a minimally invasive action
- Can eliminate dependence on glasses or contact lenses
- The whole process only takes a few minutes

ReLEx® SMILE
- VisumaxFemtosecond Laser makes thin corneal tissue shaped like a lens (lenticule) at the base of the inner layer of the cornea and then formed a 2-4mm corneal incision.
- Furthermore, the lenticule is removed through the corneal incision, so that the structure of the cornea is maintained and stable due to the absence of flap making. The small incision in the cornea will heal naturally. Intake of the lenticule allows the eye to see clearly without the aid of glasses or contact lenses.
- There are no complications related to flaps; such as a flap shifted or wrinkled due to the absence of flap making in this operation process.
- Do not use a scalpel at all and only use Visumax Femtosecond Laser which makes the healing process and phase take place faster.
- The procedure is minimally invasive because this method only requires a 4mm incision.
- It only takes a few minutes in the operation process.
- Due to the absence of openings (flaps), the patient feels more comfortable and doesn’t experience pain.
- Complaints of dry eyes after surgery are greatly reduced
- Can eliminate dependence on glasses or contact lenses
